Bright red blood produced with a bowel movement points to a bleed somewhere in the lower gastrointestinal tract. Blood that exits with stool in its bright red form typically indicates a source distal to the stomach and duodenum, so this is a lower GI bleed.

Upper GI bleeds, by contrast, often present with vomiting blood (hematemesis) or stools that are black and tarry (melena) because the blood has traveled through and been digested by the GI tract. Esophageal varices are a common cause of upper GI bleeding, not lower.
